Coleman was born in Lancashire, and born in the town of Blackpool. Coleman was head of the class at Arnold School, Blackpool and was awarded straight A's on her A-levels. The 21st of March, 2012 Doctor Who producer Steven Moffat announced at a press event that Coleman was set to be the companion of the Doctor alongside Matt Smith after Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill have left the show. Moffat chose her due to how well she could work alongside Smith as well as the fact that she was faster at speaking than Smith.
